NJ 2009-2010 Black Bear Hunt

With Governor Corzine still in office until the end of the year, there will be no bear hunt in New Jersey for the remainder of 2009. Governor-elect Chris Christie has openly stated that he supports the idea of a bear hunt.

NJ Herald: Do you support a bear hunt?" Christie: "Yes." (NJ Herald, November 1, 2009)

That statement alone does not officially mean that there will be a New Jersey bear hunt in 2010, but...

"With the election of Chris Christie as governor, the state Fish and Game Council is redrafting a black bear policy which 'we hope to have on the desk of the new (DEP) commissioner when he or she takes office in January,' said Len Wolgast, a council member and author of the council's past proposed bear policies" (NJ Herald, November 13, 2009).

I personally agree that New Jersey's black bear population is out of control and something needs to be done about it, but...

I prefer a humane way to control the population...a sterilization program. Just as feral cat colonies are controlled with trap/neuter/return programs, the black bear population should be restrained via birth control. It is humane and it will work.

With a sterilization program, members of both sides of the bear hunt debate will get their way....population control plus humane treatment. It's a win-win solution. Except for the trophy hunters...

What do you think?

What is the solution to the New Jersey black bear problem?

  • A bear hunt
  • A sterilization (birth control) program
  • Do nothing

Trophy hunters or not...it does not matter...bears need to be hunted and thinned out a bit. The sterlization does not work as well, and is complicated and expensive.

A hunt will satisfy all demands as well. If you pay to hunt in NJ, like hunters do, we pay to hunt, then you would want a bear hunt too if that was all you saw everytime you went into the woods..

Inforce laws-put trash out the day of pickup, no feeding of any wild animal.Hunters fill barrels with food strapped to trees in order attrack bears. This menthod should be outlawed.I have seen many of this rigs in the woods and some have cameras to record the time, the bear shows up daily.I know many hunters who feel this is not hunting.

It appears to me that All means to "Live together" have been tested and have failed miserably. I say this not only as a NJ resident who hears all the stories of Black Bears walking through other residents yards, Getting into houses through LOCKED doors, destroying property, and yes even the moment an adult black bear hopped over the fence and into the yard where my 2 nephews 3-5 years old were playing. Now perhaps some of you don't yet get what that moment could possibly feel like until it happens to you and believe me IT WILL eventually happen to you. There is also an imminent danger to hunters, bikers, joggers who utilize out state parks, This is true as I am a resident deer hunter who just so happened to shoot a deer (in a state park) during the fall 2009 season and upon the start of my tracking the deer soon did I realize I too had been being tracked by a Black Bear whom did not care at all that I was armed. This is a problem!! As being a resident deer hunter we are all doing our part not only to reduce the population and have wonderful meat to provide our family, I believe I speak for most hunters when I say We deserve to be safe just as we are expected to be safe. If you still don't understand then perhaps you should take a stroll into the woods of your choice 1/2 hour before sunrise or let your young children out in your yard to play. This isn't a story just to say hell yeah lets kill the bastards because it is NOT! However, It is the truth and a problem so do the right thing and pass the motion to have a Black bear hunt before someone gets hurt or killed.
